Barry McIlheney — one of Belfast’s original punk rockers, the founder of Empire Magazine and former editor of Smash Hits — was due to play in the city next week with his original band Shock Treatment, prior to his sudden death. The 65-year-old “died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep” in the early hours of Monday at his home in Spain, his brother Colin confirmed.

Jack Trotter from Co Down thanks Liverpool locals who helped himAn Co Down Liverpool fan has described how he thought he was “seconds away” from being killed after a car ploughed into supporters at the club’s Premier League victory celebration in the city. Jack Trotter (22), from Newtownards, was at the Liverpool parade on Water Street in Liverpool with his girlfriend Abbie Gallagher and friends, when the driver of a people-carrier drove into him, injuring his back and legs.

In a statement, Empire – one of the the world’s biggest movie magazines – wrote that Mr McIlheney, a “journalist, editor, publisher, broadcaster, and one-time vocalist for Northern Irish post-punk band Shock Treatment passed away in his sleep in the early hours of yesterday [Monday] morning, it has been confirmed”.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug driving, following the incident which occurred on Water Street in the city centre on Monday at around 6pm during the street celebrations for Liverpool FC winning the 2024/25 Premier League. Merseyside Police said it believed the car which struck pedestrians was able to follow an ambulance attending to someone suffering a heart attack after a roadblock was temporarily lifted.
