As Charleston celebrates the 20th anniversary of its midtown baseball park, it seems only proper to check in with the guy who cut off the Power and brought the Dirty Birds out of the coal mine. Chuck Domino, the man most responsible for the rebranding of the city’s professional baseball team from the West Virginia Power to the Charleston Dirty Birds, fondly recalls the two hectic seasons he spent here as the club’s president.

Kyle McGowin has been tabbed as the Charleston Dirty Birds’ opening-game starting pitcher and is taking the honor in stride. “This is just another day for me,” said the 33-year-old McGowin, a 6-foot-3, 202-pound right-hander who’ll be on the mound when Charleston opens the Atlantic League season on Friday night at Lexington. A native of Southampton, New York, McGowin is one of several Dirty Birds with major league experience.

The Charleston Dirty Birds’ first on-field appearance of 2025 was a blast, especially for Zach Daniels. Daniels, a 26-year-old outfielder from Georgia, showed impressive long-ball power to win the Dirty Birds’ Home Run Derby Saturday night at GoMart Ballpark, edging JJ Matejevic by a 20-19 score in the final of the eight-player exhibition.

The Charleston Dirty Birds hope to bring a professional baseball championship back to the capital city for the first time since 1990 when they meet the York Revolution in the best-of-five Atlantic League of Professional Baseball championship series, which starts Tuesday night at GoMart Ballpark. The first two games of the series are set for Tuesday and Wednesday at GoMart Ballpark, with first pitch set for 6:35 both nights.
