West Virginia's baseball team's hitting has been quite successful while shuffling players up and down the order and into and out of the lineup. The Mountaineers are hitting .305 as a team, third in the Big 12 and 34th nationally out of 299 teams. That's ahead of schools like Tennessee, Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State and in front of all but three SEC schools.

MORGANTOWN — Unlike West Virginia’s football and men’s basketball programs, the Mountaineers women’s basketball team doesn’t have to completely rebuild its roster this coming season. Admittedly coach Mark Kellogg, whose squads posted identical 25-8 records in each of his first two seasons at WVU, has some big shoes to fill this coming year.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey has signed lawmakers’ key foster care measure into law — House Bill 2880, an omnibus bill that folded together several pieces of legislation. It includes creating a team to review the death of a foster child that occurred while in state care. The Republican governor opted to veto other child welfare-related items, including a bill that would have provided pay raises for attorneys representing foster children.

WINFIELD — The defending Class AA softball state champions took another step toward their first Class AAA title. Winfield scored in every inning on Friday to knock off Point Pleasant 10-2 for the Class AAA Region 4 Section 1 championship at Winfield High School. The Generals will meet Chapmanville, the Section 2 winner, which defeated Lincoln County 3-0 on Friday to eliminate the Panthers.
