An emergency alert issued in the Greater Toronto Area hours after a Pickering woman was fatally stabbed is raising questions about the timeliness of the broadcast message as well as how it was classified as “terrorism” on some platforms. Just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, Durham Regional Police officers said they were called to a home on Lynn Heights Drive, near Whites Road North and Finch Avenue, after receiving reports that a woman was stabbed multiple times.

The Ford government is looking to give all Ontario MPPs a 35-per-cent raise after a 16-year freeze as well as changing how provincial politicians receive their pensions. Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy tabled legislation at Queen’s Park on Thursday to end a cap on salary raises that was initially put in place in 2009 under the previous Liberal government led by former premier Dalton McGuinty, bringing provincial representatives closer to what federal MPs earn.

As warmer weather settles into Ontario and we’re enjoying the outdoors, the head of an environmental non-profit organization is encouraging people to report invasive species and biodiversity threats. “Invasive species are one of the second leading causes of why we’re losing biodiversity, so it’s a really tangible issue that people can become involved in and help support concrete action,” Colin Cassin, executive director of the Invasive Species Centre, told CityNews.
