Some residents in the Berkeley Hills are mounting a late challenge to a proposed city requirement that they clear plants and other flammable materials from the 5 feet around their homes, calling it a costly new mandate that will strip the area of its lush greenery.

All three of Berkeley’s BART stations will have a new look by this summer, as the transit system replaces their familiar orange gates with a new swinging metal and plastic design that aims to cut down on fare evasion. BART crews are set to start installing what the agency calls its “Next Generation Fare Gates” at the North Berkeley station on Wednesday. This story was originally published on April 25. Locally, nationally and internationally, much has changed in the year and a half since protesters began showing up to City Council meetings to loudly demand Berkeley pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Israel’s bombardment of the Palestinian enclave has continued with little interruption — the U.S.-backed military campaign has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians since the Oct.
