Famous as a tourist destination and for its iconic nightlife district, Chapel Street, in Melbourne's inner south-east, has become a source of anxiety for some frequenting the strip. "I walked past a guy on the ground, he'd just been bashed, blood everywhere. There was police and ambos," Prahran local Maxim told the ABC in Prahran this week. Indicating a section of Chapel Street south of Malvern Road where the assault happened, Maxim said grisly sights weren't uncommon on the busy arterial.

Ousted Liberal MP Moira Deeming has won her defamation case against Victoria's Opposition Leader John Pesutto, with a Federal Court judge ordering she receive $300,000 in damages. Ms Deeming brought the lawsuit against Mr Pesutto, alleging he had defamed her as a Nazi sympathiser in the wake of an anti-trans rights rally on the steps of Victorian parliament that was gatecrashed by neo-Nazis.
