    Turmoil within a council in Melbourne's north has deepened, with the mayor of Whittlesea City Council suspended and an inquiry launched, following "serious issues of governance and health and safety concerns". On Wednesday, Local Government Minister Nick Staikos announced Whittlesea council mayor Aidan McLindon would be suspended for six months and banned from performing any councillor duties, including attending meetings, delegated committees or council premises.

    About 200 people have rallied on the steps of state parliament in protest against the government's contentious bail laws, urging it not to push ahead with the changes they say will will harm "generations of Victorian children". Karen Fletcher, a lawyer who attended the protest, said the bail laws would be disastrous if passed in parliament. "We're concerned this bill is being rushed through without proper consultation of the consequences, and on the basis of very thin reasoning," she said.

The proposed two-year trial involved assessing high school-aged kids on bail for their suitability to attend school, in an attempt to re-engage them with education.

    It's said to be the oldest documented residential building still standing in Melbourne's inner-city suburb of Fitzroy. But almost 175 years after Osborne House was built, its 60 or so rooms are vacant, the windows are boarded up, and a barbed wire fence wraps around the front facade. The Regency style home, built in the 1850s, once housed a wealthy pastoralist, and has also been home to a Victorian premier. In 1887 it underwent significant works, with a vision to transform it into a boarding house.

In a letter sent to parents at Langwarrin Park Primary School, the Department of Education said it had "concerning news" that principal Richard Barren had been charged with a "criminal offence related to possession of child abuse material".
