NEWARK - Only 67 out of 1,771 registered Newark teens appear to have voted in Tuesday's school board election, the first in which 16- and 17-year-olds were able to cast their ballots, according to unofficial tallies from the Essex County Clerk’s Office. The Newark City Council voted unanimously in 2024 to allow eligible 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections to improve Newark’s historically low turnout rate; about 6,600 Newark teens gained the right to vote.
