Krystal Rivera, the Chicago police officer killed in a shooting in Chatham Thursday night, was a fierce and loving mother, friend and police officer who was dedicated to her job protecting the community, those who knew her said Friday. CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said Rivera was a mother and a four-year veteran of the police force. She leaves behind a young daughter along with the rest of her family and friends. Snelling described her as vibrant and fearless.

Chicago has more lead service lines than any other city in the United States. That concerning stat has inspired researchers at Northwestern University to help with a solution. They came up with an at-home test — allowing people to check for lead in their own water. Grad student Tyler Lucci has lost count of days spent in a lab. "It's my life — 8 to 5, 8 to 6," Lucci said.

An old and deconsecrated church building in Chicago's Jefferson Park neighborhood is undergoing a transformation. At the former St. Cornelius Church, at 5430 W. Foster Ave., rows of pews will soon be replaced with pickleball courts. The St. Cornelius Parish was established in 1925. The parish grew over the next few decades, and the current church building — which accommodated 750 worshipers — was built in 1964 and dedicated in 1965. By the 1980s, there were 2,500 member families in the parish.

Major League Baseball is making a major investment in professional women's sports. MLB is partnering with the Athletes Unlimited Softball League — which is made up of the best pro softball players in the United States. Spectators can catch games in the northwest Chicago suburb of Rosemont this summer. Athletes Unlimited has been around since 2020. "It is just so fast-paced. It is action-packed," said Kim Ng, commissioner of the AUSL.
