Scottsdale Community College is teaming up with Taliesin West to offer a weekend creative writing workshop March 8-10. Taliesin West is a national historic landmark in the McDowell Mountain foothills. It served as famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and “desert laboratory” and is the current home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. English faculty and creative writing lead Kim Sabin, along with SCC English faculty members Sarah Yaron and Erica Litz will direct the sessions.

On Friday, Feb. 23, Scottsdale Community College and the Center for Native and Urban Wildlife will host students and community members registered through the college’s for a tree propagation event. CNUW education and outreach program manager Natalie Case says the effort will producing up to 100 mesquite trees to be given out to SRP-MIC tribal members during the community’s Earth Day celebration.

Arizona is the nation’s most food wasteful state, and when food waste decomposes in our landfills it creates large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas. On Thursday evening, Scottsdale Community College hosted two showings of “Kiss the Ground”, a documentary film narrated by actor and environmental activist Woody Harrelson.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) an estimated 34 metric tons of methane, a greenhouse gas, are released into the atmosphere for every 1,000 tons of landfilled food waste. It has also been reported that if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the World. Scottsdale city councilwoman Solange Whitehead is spearheading a citywide effort to reduce or eliminate food waste in our landfills.
