In Michigan, there is a Fire Academy at Oakland Community College (OCC) which shares on its website that it has the only emergency services simulation lab in the state.

EAST TAWAS – The sun shone down through an almost cloudless sky, accompanied by a cool breeze, as if it had been specially ordered for the grand re-opening of the Tawas Point Lighthouse after a year-long restoration that had required all hands on deck.

EAST TAWAS – Once a year, the East Tawas City Council holds a joint meeting in which city departments give presentations on capital improvements within their jurisdiction and city boards and commissions present summaries for their agency. This also provides an opportunity for the council to ask any pertinent questions. This year, in addition to its regular business, the city will also be preparing a new master plan which will begin implementation on Oct. 1 and cover up to Sept. 30, 2029.

EAST TAWAS – Among the agenda items for the April 15 meeting of the East Tawas City Council, were the presentation of a certificate of appreciation, a summary of the city’s annual financial audit, the appointment of a new East Tawas Fire Department (ETFD) chief and monthly reports from several city departments and agencies. Although further down the agenda, it was of special note that City Manager Brent Barringer recommended the appointment of Andy Ryan to the position of ETFD chief.

OSCODA – The Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority (OWAA) held their regular monthly meeting on Thursday April 18th beginning with a lengthy closed session with the addition of alternate Terry Dutcher. In addition to regular business, agenda items included briefings on the second quarter budget, VirTower operation statistics, snow tracker data and the pause on the search for a new Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport (OWA) director.

OSCODA – The results of the latest financial audit of the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority (OWAA) were presented during the March OWAA meeting, by Anderson, Tackman & Company, PLC (ATC). Auditor Ken Talsma was on hand to narrate the provided infographics and answer questions.

EAST TAWAS – The Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) invited District 99 Representative Mike Hoadley (R) to tour the local area this past Friday, to offer him deeper insight into the communities of Tawas City and East Tawas, and what is important to those who reside there. A Flint native, Hoadley was in his first term as Mayor of AuGres when he was elected to the state’s House of Representatives in the November 2022 election.

TAWAS CITY – Hoping for better weather, Palomino Hope held their Easter event this past Saturday, one week later than originally planned. Luckily for event goers, the sunny and warm afternoon resulted in the perfect weather for an Easter egg hunt. Last year’s inaugural event was more than a bit cold. Palomino Hope, which puts a special focus on children and veterans, is a nonprofit whose vision is to better people’s lives by offering opportunities to spend time with horses.

EAST TAWAS – The East Tawas City Council had a relatively short agenda, when they gathered for their first meeting of the month on April 1. Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Bolen reported that the East Tawas Library is currently reviewing their statistics and evaluating their staffing needs. Those from the library are also considering several new ideas that they have seen other Michigan libraries implement successfully, and will be keeping the council in the loop on their research and efforts.
Firefighter All-Stars face off against Lions Legends

TAWAS CITY – It was all about the children at this past weekend’s basketball fundraiser, with retired legends of the Detroit Lions football team who had come to Tawas City to help raise money for the Iosco County Firefighters Association (ICFFA). They played against the Firefighting All-Star team, which included volunteer firefighters from the county, along with a few younger volunteer basketball players.
