Kaya Ortiz has a fascinating personal story. A Filipino-Australian, they experienced religious oppression in their home country and have journeyed for many years towards greater self-understanding of their queer identity. At least that’s what a reader may glean from reading their 2024 Dorothy Hewett Award-winning collection, Past & Parallel Lives. A collection should, however, stand or fall on the basis of its poems, rather than the poet’s backstory. And, at their best, Ortiz’s poems are stunning.

CANTON – Parents can now experience the joy of reading a book to their child or children a thousandfold by participating in a free program offered at the Canton Free Library. Introduced by the 1,000 Books Foundation, the goal of the program focuses on parents reading 1,000 to their newborn, infant or toddlers by the time they enroll in kindergarten. So far the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program has been well received at the Canton Free Library.

CANTON – A student at Canton Central School was recognized recently by state leaders for his efforts to fight the tactics of the tobacco industry. Ryan Mitchell, who is a member of the Seaway Valley Prevention Council’s Reality Check, was presented a proclamation signed by Assemblyman Scott Gray and Senator Daniel Stec during a visit to the Capitol Building in Albany.
