Mason Independent School District officially named Wade Griffin, Weimar athletic director and football coach, as the next athletic director and football coach for the Punchers on Monday. Griffin has 15 years of head coaching experience, where he put together a 103-70 record with stints at Brookshire Royal, Elgin, White Settlement Brewer, Giddings and three seasons leading Weimar. In 2023, he led the Wildcats to a 10-3 record and a regional semifinal appearance.

Kohen Grantom did not need to look far for inspiration growing up. Grantom was in elementary and middle school as University of Arizona signee Vance Ott set Coahoma High School records and competed in the UIL state track and field meet. Grantom said he credits the encouragement and help from Ott and his family as his inspiration for getting into Paralympic wheelchair racing. Now a freshman at Coahoma, Grantom holds three school records in the wheelchair 100-meter dash, 400, and shot put events.

The Mason Independent School District posted the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach position as available on its website, indicating the school district is moving on from athletic director/head football coach Michael McLeod, as first reported by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Rumblings of the position opening began in late March when the athletic director position with possible football coach responsibilities attached was posted on the school’s website.
