A 19-year-old Helena man faces charges of felony assault with a weapon, misdemeanor partner or family member assault and misdemeanor assault after a June 3 call to authorities in which he reportedly holed up in a house. Helena Police Department officers responded around 3 a.m. to the 3200 block of U.S. Highway 12 to a report of an assault in progress, according to an affidavit filed in Justice Court and police dispatch information. They saw a male and female running from the residence toward them.

A petition was recently submitted to Lewis and Clark County commissioners, asking them to help rid an area of the North Helena Valley of what residents say is an “unsightly blight on the neighborhood.”Tom Rygg, who lives north of Lincoln Road and Montana Avenue, presented the petition signed by 77 nearby residents at the May 8 county commissioners meeting. “From my porch I can see the blight that 7710 N. Montana Ave. has become,” he said. Rygg asked commissioners to take action.

The kayaker whose body was pulled Saturday from the Missouri River near Craig was identified Wednesday as Melvin Scarberry, 56, of Florida, the sheriff said Wednesday. A cause and manner of death has not been determined as the autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton said. Scarberry’s exact city of residence in Florida was not immediately known. The county’s 911 dispatch center received a call at 5:20 p.m. Saturday of a missing kayaker.

An autopsy Wednesday by a pathologist with the Montana State Crime Lab determined Scarberry died from asphyxia due to drowning, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton said. "No other injuries or medical concerns were associated with his drowning," Dutton said. Scarberry’s exact city of residence in Florida was not immediately known.

The body of a 56-year-old man who was kayaking earlier in the day was found Saturday in the Missouri River near Craig, authorities said Monday. Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton said the county’s 911 dispatch center received a call at 5:20 p.m. of a missing kayaker. The man was reported to have missed the takeout and continued on downstream. About 20 minutes later, a fishing guide and clients found the kayak and a short time later, they found the man’s body, Dutton said.
