This week, Cornell University announced efforts to reduce its budget amid financial turmoil following federal funding cuts. The university is the largest employer in Tompkins County, employing 11,285 people. Cornell officials did not specify how large cuts or potential layoffs will be or where they will be made. “No Kings” demonstrations took place across the Southern Tier Saturday, joining nationwide rallies in protest of the Trump administration. The protests were organized nationally by groups including Indivisible and 50501. National organizers estimated over 5 million people participated in more than 2,000 protests.

This is a developing story. Steuben County declared a state of emergency in multiple towns after heavy rainfall and flooding Monday night. As of 9:30 p.m. Monday, the towns of Canisteo, Bath, Cameron, Urbana, Pulteny, and Wayne were all under states of emergency. The following roadways are affected: SR36, SR248, SR54, SR 54-A, CR10, CR15, CR14, CR119, CR87, CR88, CR89. First responders and highway crews are actively responding to multiple calls.

The Park Church is hosting its third annual Elmira Pride Festival downtown on Saturday. “Our goal this year was to have a safe place for joy,” said Jenny Monroe, Chairperson for the Elmira Pride Festival. The church has been at the forefront of social justice since its inception. It was started in 1846 by abolitionists who worked to safely provide passage for enslaved people through Elmira on their way to freedom.
