From blow-ins to travelling bands, foodie pop-ups to melting pots, the West Cork town of Ballydehob has become a cultural crossroads. What’s its secret? There’s a small plaque near a fork in the road in Ballydehob. Fixed to the wall above an electrical box, it says: ‘As you slide down the bannister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.’Above it, on a gable wall, is a massive mural of a Blue Nude by French impressionist painter, Henri Matisse.

New owners have spent €6m on an upgrade of a Drury Street hotel that won regular guests with its centrality and charm. Can it step up without losing its specialness? Brooks has always been a kind of best-kept secret in Dublin for me. Not that it’s off-books or clubby. It’s on booking.com like every hotel, and busy with American tourists when I stayed last week. It’s not particularly hip. There’s no spa, terrace or garden, or much lounging space. But this hotel always had feeling.
