A "perverted and disgusting" murderer has died behind bars at Frankland Prison in Durham. Gareth Dack was serving a life sentence with a minimum of 33 years for the brutal killing of much-loved Hartlepool grandmother Norma Bell, 79, back in 2016. But after serving less than a decade behind bars, he was found dead on Monday, the prison service confirmed.

Children as young as five have been suspects in sexual offence investigations, shocking new figures have revealed. Over the past four years, officers at Cleveland Police have suspected children under the age of 10 in more than 1,000 crime reports - ranging from violence, public order and robbery. Due to their age, they will never be charged or taken to court. In Middlesbrough, a child as young as six was suspected of a weapon possession offence.

The son of an adored grandmother who was murdered in her own home says he wanted her killer "to suffer as long as possible", but is relieved none of his family will ever see him walk free. Norma Bell has been described as an "angel" who had a "heart as big as a lion" by her loved ones. The 79-year-old grandmother, from Hartlepool, was killed in cold blood by Gareth Dack in April 2016. On April 21, 2025, Dack died at HMP Frankland, the prison service confirmed.

A danger driver who was locked up twice for a horrific crash which led to the death of a beloved mum-of-two has died. Lewis Heslop, 34, was first jailed in 2016 for causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Having served his sentenced, Heslop was prosecuted again six years after the offence when his victim died as a result of the life-changing injuries she suffered.
