Alberta Health Services is hoping that you will have the conversation about being an organ and tissue donor. AHS has launched a new, light-hearted campaign in hopes of normalizing the conversation around deceased donations. As part of National Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness Week, AHS is launching a new campaign to encourage Albertans to talk w/ their loved ones about their donation decisions. The light-hearted ads aim to normalize discussions about end-of-life donation and spark conversation.

A survey by Fertility Alberta shows cost is a major barriers for many people who are struggling to start a family. The advocacy and outreach group surveyed nearly 650 Albertans in September 2023. It found that 74 per cent of people asked did not proceed with fertility treatments because of cost and 90 per cent of those respondents said financial help from the provincial government would have enabled them to try.

Six-year-old Karter Bourgeault captured the hearts of NHL fans while he battled an aggressive form of brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). In the summer of 2023, three days shy of the anniversary of his diagnosis, Bourgeault took his last breath, with his parents by his side. “There’s a huge void,” Karter’s mom, Nicole Fraser, said.

After more than four years of living in a bubble, Jakob Guziak could soon have a normal life. In August 2019, when he was just 10 days old, Jakob was diagnosed with ACA SCID or severe combined immunodeficiency. It means he didn’t have an immune system and in order to protect Jakob, the family lived in a “bubble,” keeping interactions with others extremely limited. There are members of his family he still hasn’t met.

Patients and staff at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton know firsthand how beneficial the pet therapy program there can be. Those in charge say they want to expand it to help even more people. “Patients spend a long time in rehab,” said Daryl Richel, the volunteer coordinator at the hospital. “It gives them a chance to relax and get out of their heads a little bit.”“It brightens people’s day,” he added.
