The weather is warming, which means one thing – and one thing only. We’re loading up our beach bags, finding a spot on the sand and ploughing through our TBR (‘to be read’) list. These are the books we’re reading this spring/summer.
‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ by Sarah J. MaasFine, we’ll bite.

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer By Siddhartha Mukherjee, Scribner
The protagonist of this Pulitzer Prize winning book is a life-threatening illness that colonizes our bodies in the most violent way: cancer. Mukherjee’s sharp writing, grounded in painstaking research, makes this an important contribution to medical journalism, and to our lives. I am in awe of this book because it makes this inscrutable illness slightly more understandable.

In historical fantasy, we are invited to see how the past might have looked if a given magical element existed. What is the appeal of this reimagining? I think everyone is a bit interested in the past. As a historian, certainly I am. I like to think that everyone likes the past in some way, even if they may not like the discipline of history. They like the idea of history. They watch movies about it, they read tons of books, they watch documentaries.

I just got back from Costa Rica where I partook in my favorite adventure activity on vacation: reading relevant Wikipedia facts about where we travel to my husband as he navigates us where we need to be. I like to research a little before we go anywhere, of course, but I also love to save some surprises for the trip.

Shepherd is reader supported. When you buy books, we may earn an affiliate commission. Myfavorite read in 2023…I loved this book for its pacy story, fantastic characters, and gripping plot. The story is intense, and Holly Craig is a fantastic writer. Every single page is gripping and drives the story forward. A woman becomes obsessed with the woman next door and befriends her. When her new friend is murdered, her husband insists that they flee. What happens next is a story of survival. Brilliant.
