Gretna Public Schools will open the 2021–22 school year Aug. 12 with masks optional. The announcement was to be made to parents by email July 21. The decision — made with the help of health department officials — comes at a time when local mask mandates have expired and people are getting vaccinated, said Assistant Superintendent Travis Lightle.

The July 12 blood drive hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 216 collected 74 units of blood. The goal was 63units. Receiving gallon awards were: Steve Moore, 1 gallon; Sharon Laughlin, 5 gallons; Kent Johansen, 5 gallons; Janice Wear, 12 gallons; and Wayne Gundvaldson, 13 gallons. Their lifetime donations have benefited 864 patients. Congratulations donors; good job.

The Nebraska Supreme Court and Nebraska Court of Appeals announced Tuesday its overruling of Sarpy County’s appeal for a rehearing regarding the years-long legal battle over the City of Gretna’s annexation package. Proposed in late 2017, the annexation includes nearly 3,000 acres and thousands of new residents. Landmarks like Sapp Bros. and Vala’s Pumpkin Patch will officially be inside city limits, as will subdivisions such as Standing Stone and Lincoln Place.

Fourth graders at Gretna Elementary School always study Nebraska history, but this year was made special as a time capsule from a former class was uncovered in their classroom. Following summer renovations in 2019, fourth-grade teacher Chris Vos returned to his classroom, where a construction worker let him know they had found something in his classroom ceiling during construction.
