(WJBF) – The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is telling drivers to avoid Highway 1 and I-20 “at all possible” after a traffic accident involving hazardous materials took place Tuesday. In an announcement posted to Facebook, officials state the road is blocked and detours are in place, after a truck spilled methyl acetate, according to Chief Deputy Eric Abdullah.

    AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A large commercial dryer caught fire at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center laundry room Thursday night. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said the fire was discovered at approximately 8:09 p.m. on April 24. According to authorities, sprinkler systems reduced the fire from spreading until the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department arrived. Several inmates were evaluated for smoke inhalation, additional resources were requested upon arrival.

    CSRA (WJBF) – “Champions of the Classroom” is a new initiative that TaxSlayer, in partnership with Gator Bowl Charities, is rolling out in the Augusta Metro Area this year. The program offers an opportunity for area teachers to apply for a chance to receive a $500 grant for their classroom, fulfilled through Donors Choose, a website where teachers can order classroom supplies and the grant funds cover the cost.
