Then life showed up. Instead of continuing her studies at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., Regard became the primary caregiver to her mother, Neenya, after a breast cancer diagnosis. Bill Knauf's first job in racing was hawking his uncle's tip sheet as a teenager outside of the gates of Saratoga Race Course – not far from where he grew up in the capital district near Albany. For as long as he can remember, the Knauf family spent summer weekends at the upstate New York track, packing a cooler, getting in line early, and grabbing a picnic table in the backyard when the gates opened.
