South Africa’s National Lottery faces a potential nine-month halt due to legal disputes over a new operator and a rejected temporary licence. The South Africa National Lottery could be shuttered for nine months despite the government selecting a successful bidder for the new eight-year licence. Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau named Siyakhaya Holdings as the new operator on Wednesday 28 May. The licence covers the National Lottery and Sports Pools.

The founder of payments platform Papara has been arrested in Turkey over illegal gambling allegations. Turkish prosecutors Tuesday arrested 13 suspects, including the founder and chairman of online payment platform Papara, in a sweeping investigation into illegal gambling operations. Papara founder Ahmed Faruk Karslı was among those detained in raids across Istanbul that began at around 5am local time.

Private equity firm Altor Capital has completed its acquisition of the Tasmania JackJumpers and plans to expand the National Basketball League (NBL) team’s home venue to meet the demand for tickets. The JackJumpers play at MyState Bank Arena, which has a capacity of around 4,300 for NBL games. The arena is located in Glenorchy, just outside of Hobart. The JackJumpers sold out every home game during the 2024-25 NBL season.

The country’s Court of Auditors has accused the National Office for Gambling (ONJN) of not meeting its statutory duty to monitor and control online gambling operator activity since its formation in 2013. In a report published on 21 February the auditor said it is considering notifying Romania’s criminal prosecution bodies of these failings. This is primarily due to the ONJN not enforcing a legal requirement for it to have remote access to all licensed operators’ systems.

Kuwait has been awarded hosting rights to the first edition of the FIP World Cup Pairs, a new padel event that will offer prize money of more than €1m (£829,000/$1.05m) across its men’s and women’s competitions. The tournament will be held in collaboration with Premier Padel and will be sponsored by BNK Holding. It will take place from November 3-9. The Arena Kuwait in Zahra will host the centre court, with additional playing facilities at the nearby Rafa Nadal Academy.
