Syracuse, N.Y. – Upstate New York tourism officials are seeing signs that Canadians angered by President Donald Trump’s tariff war and his talk of turning their country into the “51st state” will stay away from the Empire State this summer. One million Canadians crossed the northern border into the state in March, nearly a third fewer than the 1.4 million that entered New York in the same month last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

Syracuse, N.Y. – The proposed new state budget includes $3 million to help launch Syracuse’s largest housing subdivision in decades, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday. Hochul announced during a visit to Syracuse that the $254 billion fiscal year 2026 state budget agreement she has reached with lawmakers includes $3 million to extend sewers to the former Lafayette Hills country club on Lafayette Road.

Syracuse, N.Y. – A long-delayed residential and commercial development on Syracuse’s South Side could finally get off the ground this year -- with some changes. Developers of Salina 1st at 1081 S. Salina St. have decided to split the project in two in hopes of making it easier to finance. When the project was proposed in 2019, it was to consist of apartments, offices, retail and light manufacturing.

Syracuse, N.Y. – M3 Innovation, the second sports lighting company founded by Syracuse entrepreneur Joe Casper, has been acquired by Acuity Inc., North America’s largest lighting company. Atlanta-based Acuity announced on Thursday it has acquired M3, which was founded in 2019 by Casper and Chris Nolan. Terms of the acquisition were not released. Acuity said the Syracuse startup is now part of the Acuity Brands Lighting business portfolio.
