On May 20, 2015, the Omaha community lost a respected officer in the line of duty. Officer Kerrie Orozco was a member of the gang unit and was involved with Police Athletics for Community Engagement. On that day, Orozco headed to 30th and Martin, where she was to help serve a warrant for a known gang member, Marcus Wheeler. Omaha police said Wheeler was walking in the area when officers spotted him. Sergeant Jeff Kopietz said officers asked him to stop and that's when he began opening fire.
