(WAFB) - The Hammond Police Department confirmed to the WAFB I-TEAM Friday that Brandon Ostarly, a Louisiana State Trooper (LSP), was issued a misdemeanor summons tied to a shoplifting investigation at Target on March 20th. Ostarly tendered his resignation earlier this week, according to a state official. The charge listed on the summons is theft by shoplifting, according to the Hammond Police Department.

(WAFB) - Incumbent East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome thanked her supporters Sunday after losing her bid for re-election. “To my team, my family, my friends, and every single one of you who believed in me; I cannot thank you enough,” Broome said in an email to supporters. Broome, a Democrat, was defeated in Saturday’s runoff election against Republican Sid Edwards. Edwards, a political newcomer, received 54 percent of the vote.

    BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The City of Gonzales has elected a new mayor after a runoff election Saturday, marking the first new mayor for that city since 2008. Darrow, Louisiana native Timothy Riley won the election with 54 percent of the vote, becoming the first Black mayor in that Ascension Parish city’s history. He defeated runoff challenger Kemlyn Bailey Lomas. Voter turnout in the city was 28.9 percent, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State.

    ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WAFB/Gray News) - A man and a young child are dead following a police pursuit in Louisiana, according to investigators. Investigators say a man killed himself and his young child after leading police on a pursuit that began in Gonzales and ended in a cemetery in St. James Parish. As the pursuit ended, the 23-year-old man reportedly shot himself and his 1-year-old daughter. The child died on the scene.

    BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A Republican candidate has joined the race for East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President. Real estate agent Tammy Cook qualified for this fall's election on Thursday, becoming the third official candidate in the race. The other candidates are both Democrats, including incumbent Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and former state representative Ted James.
