    Marjorie Rose Smith Newsome, 91, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Wayne County on Feb. 23, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Eula Parks Smith. In addition to her parents, Marjorie Rose was preceded in death by her sisters, Charlotte Johnson, Janelle McCullen, and Sarah Taylor; and brothers, Elwood Lee Smith and Russell Smith.

    On May 30, Mary Helen Harper Hicks of Wayne County will celebrate a remarkable milestone — her 100th birthday. Born in 1925, Mary Helen has lived a life rich in faith, family and service, her granddaughter, Chrishaunda Vick, said. The devoted wife of to the late Berry Hicks, also known as Chris, she is the proud mother of seven children, with two of them being deceased — her eldest Kenneth Hicks (2009) and youngest Timothy Hicks (died at birth).

    Caldwell County deputies arrested and charged a Lenoir woman Wednesday who was wanted on drug-related charges in three counties. Deputies made a traffic stop on Morganton Boulevard after identifying the driver as Candace Yvonne Wright, 30, of Hickory Boulevard, in Lenoir, according to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies learned that Wright had an outstanding order for arrest.

    More than 200 homes and businesses in Caldwell County will be connected to high-speed internet service as part of $41 million in state funding approved for 17 counties. Gov. Josh Stein announced Tuesday that 11,816 households and businesses will benefit from the funding as part of the Completing Access to Broadband project. In Caldwell County, 203 homes and businesses will be connected to high-speed internet through Connect Holding, which operates under the name Brightspeed.

    Lenoir has become a home away from home for eight German students who have been staying with host families in the area for two weeks. The high school students, all from the Black Forest region in southwest Germany, arrived in Lenoir on March 31 and plan to leave Friday. The Black Forest is a mountainous region in Germany that borders France. It is known for its dense, evergreen forests and villages, its spas and cuckoo clocks, since the 1700s.
