More than 200 homes and businesses in Caldwell County will be connected to high-speed internet service as part of $41 million in state funding approved for 17 counties. Gov. Josh Stein announced Tuesday that 11,816 households and businesses will benefit from the funding as part of the Completing Access to Broadband project. In Caldwell County, 203 homes and businesses will be connected to high-speed internet through Connect Holding, which operates under the name Brightspeed.

Lenoir has become a home away from home for eight German students who have been staying with host families in the area for two weeks. The high school students, all from the Black Forest region in southwest Germany, arrived in Lenoir on March 31 and plan to leave Friday. The Black Forest is a mountainous region in Germany that borders France. It is known for its dense, evergreen forests and villages, its spas and cuckoo clocks, since the 1700s.

Dry weather conditions and low stream flow contributed to Duke Energy issuing a drought watch for the Catawba-Wateree River Basin. The basin is in Stage 0 of the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group’s drought protocol that asks members to monitor conditions more closely, according to the advisory group. Stage 0, the first of five drought stages, went into effect April 1, with rainfall prior to the date having little effect on drought conditions.

The N.C. Forest Service has lifted its ban on all open burning because of recent rainfall and reduced danger of fires spreading. The statewide ban went into effect on March 21 due to dry conditions and was lifted Wednesday. “We’ve received some well-timed, much-needed rain over the last couple days which has helped reduce fire danger, allowing us to lift burn ban restrictions across the state,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.
