    Renters looking for a new home in California may be in for a surprise, as one report says apartment sizes are shrinking in many parts of the state. About 45% of California residents are renters, according to the U.S. Census. A report by RentCafe identified the cities with the biggest—and smallest—apartment sizes across the 100 largest renter hubs in the United States as of February 2025.     Monterey County has installed vending machines with free naloxone and fentanyl test strips to combat the opioid crisis. The machines are located in areas with high overdose rates and foot traffic, including three in Salinas. The initiative aims to reduce opioid-related deaths and emergencies, which totaled 49 deaths and over 300 hospitalizations/ER visits in the county in 2023.
