The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has implemented an initiative designed to teach Wayne County students about the dangers of drugs and violence. Wayne County deputy Victoria Rouse was trained by the Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence to start the program at several Wayne County public schools. LEAD is a nationwide nonprofit that works to help educate students about the importance of avoiding drugs and violence.

Wayne County residents have a new place to shop for groceries and more. Dollar General, an American discount chain, recently opened a new DG Market, at 702 N. George St.The new store replaces the Dollar General, which was located at 301 N. George St., said Kaitlin Walker, Dollar General district manager. “It’s a relocation,” Walker said. “That’s all it is.”Dominic Goings, DG Market store manager, said business has been steady since the store opened on Oct. 18.

The N.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority has awarded a total of $800,000 to support the operations of two manufacturing companies in Wayne County. The projects are two of the 20 approved by the N.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority that will provide nearly $8.7 million for projectss statewide, according to the governor’s office. The grant requests include commitments to create a total of 802 jobs, 408 of which were previously announced, and more than $474 million in public and private investment.

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has started to issue new driver licenses, permits and identification cards that feature the latest security design to combat fraud. The credentials are the most secure in state history, according to DMV officials. “I am proud to announce the implementation of the most secure credential in our great state’s history,” said DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

PIKEVILLE — Several Pikeville residents and the town's police chief called for the resignation of Mayor Garrett Johnston who is accused of making negative statements about the police chief and his officers. Instead, the town board voted 3-0 to censure Garrett during its meeting Monday. Censure is a tool used by the board to reprimand one of its members when they have disagreements or opposition toward the censured official, said Harry Lorello, the town of Pikeville's attorney.

The Goldsboro City Council was divided in its 4-3 vote to approve the fiscal year 2024-25 budget that boosts the city property tax rate 9.5 cents and water and sewer rates by 2%. A package found near a Goldsboro business resulted in area roads being closed as an explosive ordnance disposal team from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base inspected the package that was found empty. Goldsboro police were alerted of a suspicious package that was left in the parking lot at Bread of Heaven Bakery, at 2419 E. Ash St., on June 14 at 8:46 a.m., said LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer.
