    The Freedom Tree that symbolized the men and women in uniform who died while serving in the military has been removed due to advanced age, disease and public safety concerns. The tree, previously located near the corner of Center and Spruce streets and the Goldsboro Fire Department, was removed Wednesday after the city of Goldsboro entered a contract with Lanier Tree Services, a Kinston-based tree removal service, said LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer.

    The Goldsboro City Council was divided in its 4-3 vote to approve the 2025-26 budget that includes a 7.5% water and sewer rate hike in the upcoming fiscal year. City residents will also pay triple the cost of license plate fees at $30 per year. Property owners are expected to pay more in property taxes with this year's property revaluation, even though the city reduced its property tax rate by 13.5 cents per $100 in property valuation.

    The Golden Leaf Foundation recently announced that 215 rural North Carolina students were selected to receive up to a $14,000 Golden LEAF scholarship, including 10 in Wayne County.     A Pikeville man was arrested and charged after allegedly failing to work after being paid. Anthony Tyrone Smoot, 55, of Paul Michael Circle, Pikeville, was charged with four counts of obtaining advances under promise to work and pay for same, said Joel Gillie, Wayne County public information officer, on Thursday.
