Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Stewart has yet to sign his rookie contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, causing him to miss his first practice with the team Friday. Cincinnati selected Stewart with the No. 17 overall pick of last month’s NFL draft. The choice made him the first Aggie pass rusher to go in the first round since Myles Garrett in 2017, largely due to his freakish athleticism and high potential to wreak havoc at the next level.

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates announced on Thursday that his philanthropic Gates Foundation would close in 20 years, shuttering down on Dec. 31, 2045. The announcement comes as President Donald Trump’s administration is attempting to slash funding for health, foreign aid and other public assistance program, all causes that the Gates Foundation supports.

Legendary British rock band The Who appears to have played their last show in Houston. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees announced their North American farewell tour Thursday morning, a 16-show run starting in August. Neither Houston, nor any other city in Texas, made the cut. Singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend billed the tour, named “The Song is Over North American Farewell Tour,” as a “truly grand finale” in a press conference in London on Thursday.

Former Houston Astros coach Don Kelly is the new manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton on Thursday following a 12-26 start to the season and a current seven-game losing streak. Kelly, who was serving as the team’s bench coach, was promoted in his place. Kelly will be getting his first managerial opportunity after seven seasons as an MLB coach. That journey begun in 2019, when Kelly was hired as the Astros first base coach under former manager A.J. Hinch.

The Astros, who open a six-game homestand of Friday, have seen a slight downtick in attendance from last year through 18 home games this season. So far, 590,174 have attended Houston’s four homestands, averaging 32,787 per game, according to Baseball Reference, a 3% decrease from 2024. At this point a year ago, the Astros had drawn 605,599 for an average of 33,644 per game.
