Zy-Jae St. Pierre was on a walk with his mother on Sunday in Rochester when he spotted a bridge over the raging Genesee River. Curious about the water, the 5-year-old boy ran ahead of his mom, who was pushing a younger child in a stroller, and climbed onto the railing of the Andrews Street bridge, Rochester Police Chief David Smith said. Zy-Jae’s mom yelled for him to stop. But the boy toppled over the railing and fell about 40 feet into the fast-moving river below.

Two baby bears almost didn’t make it after losing their mother last winter in Upstate New York. The orphaned black bear cubs were starving when they were spotted in the Adirondacks. To save the malnourished babies, the cubs were brought to Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center, a wildlife rehabilitator in the Catskills, to recover. “It was a long cold winter for these two black bear yearlings that came to us this year,” the wildlife center wrote on Facebook.

Another blisteringly hot summer appears to be in New York’s future. The National Weather Service and other major weather forecasters expect summer 2025 to be hotter than normal across most of New York state and much of the United States. It’s part of an uncomfortable trend: Last summer was the fourth-hottest in Central New York and in the nation, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. “It’s going to be a scorcher of a summer,” cautioned the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
