Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate accused of killing a health care executive in Midtown Manhattan, was indicted in federal court late Thursday. A grand jury indicted Mangione on charges of stalking, murder with a firearm and another gun offense, according to the four-count indictment. Prosecutors say he traveled across state lines to stalk and kill United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson last December. Federal prosecutors charged Mangione in a complaint that month.

Lawmakers and criminal justice experts excoriated Mayor Eric Adams and his administration on Wednesday for their handling of a stalled plan to close Rikers Island. “Now is the time for strong leadership by all present and future office holders in this city to close Rikers as soon as humanly possible,” former Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, who chairs a commission to shut down the complex, said at a City Council hearing dominated by criticism of Adams and his team.

A Louisiana judge is giving the government until Wednesday evening to turn over any evidence it has to justify the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a spokesperson for the Columbia University graduate’s legal team said. Judge Jamee Comans scheduled a hearing for Friday, according to Jen Nessel, a spokesperson for the Center for Constitutional Rights, which is part of Khalil’s legal representation.

Judges are finding a growing number of criminal defendants in New York City’s state courts mentally unfit to stand trial, meaning their charges must either be dropped or they must be held in hospitals, not in jail, according to city health data obtained by Gothamist. But the hospitals where the defendants are supposed to go for treatment can’t keep up with the increasing demand, mental health officials, researchers and legal experts said.
