David L. Peebles, a legend in the plumbing, heating and industrial supply business who put Newport News-based Ferguson on the map, has died. Peebles served as the president of Ferguson from 1969 to 1989 and then chairman and CEO from 1989 to 1994. He was named the 2015 Daily Press Citizen of the Year in recognition of his work building the company into a billion-dollar distribution powerhouse. He died on Friday at 96 years old.

Acoustical Sheetmetal is expanding its footprint in Virginia Beach for the third time in six years. The company plans to invest $45.8 million to expand its operations in Innovation Park and add 350 jobs, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Friday. Founded in 1994, the company manufactures sound-reducing and weather-protective enclosures for on-site power generation equipment, mainly for the data center industry. It employs just under 500 people, including 182 at its Production Road facility.

USAA, a leading provider of insurance for more than 14 million military members, veterans and their families, will expand its presence in Hampton Roads. The Texas-based company, which dates back to 1922, announced Thursday that it has purchased an almost 200,000-square-foot building at 1341 Crossways Blvd. in the Greenbrier neighborhood of Chesapeake. The company would not disclose details of the transaction.

Real estate developer Brad Waitzer knows the dire need for more housing in Hampton Roads. The president of Virginia Beach-based Signature Management Corporation has developed more than 8,000 housing units over the course of his 37-year career. And now he has his eye on the Regal Cinema building and surrounding property at 100 Regal Way in the Kiln Creek area of Newport News. “It was actively marketed for redevelopment by the owners,” Waitzer said.
