    Hampton, S.C. -- In a legal battle stemming from the tragic 2019 death of Mallory Beach, her family, led by Renee Beach, has filed a lawsuit against Gregory M. Parker and others. Mallory Beach was 19 when she was thrown off the Murdaugh's boat. Paul Murdaugh, the youngest son, was driving the boat when it allegedly crashed into a bridge, after he had been drinking. Gregory Parker owns a chain of convenience stores in Georgia and South Carolina.

    The first weekend of March has plenty in store for Morgantown with spring just around the corner. This weekend, The DA recommends a Morgantown Mardi Gras celebration, a horse show and a renaissance fair-themed event. Levels Arcade will debut its newest drink Renaissance-Fair style at its “Mead Me at the Arcade” event at 6 p.m. Friday. The arcade is partnered with Superstition Meadery to import kegs of mead from Prescott, Arizona, for Morgantown residents to enjoy, according to the event’s website.

This weekend, The DA recommends an Appalachian Music Festival, a Backcountry Bakery and the Morgantown Polar Plunge. The Gardner Winter Music Festival will return to Morgantown on Friday and Saturday, offering Appalachian music performances and workshops for attendees. Located at South Middle School at 500 E.

    The Morgantown Ice Arena closed on Feb. 3 for renovations, displacing WVU Club Hockey before the conclusion of its 2024-25 season. The $3-4 million project will provide a nearly “complete remodel” to the arena from February to October, according to Morgantown Board of Parks and Recreation Director of Athletic Programs and Community Facilities Greg Travinski.

    Autumn Tooms Cyprés stepped down from her role as College of Applied Human Sciences (CAHS) dean last week, according to WVU Director of Communications April Kaull. “Dean Cyprès will step aside from her duties and transition to a development assignment for the remainder of the semester as she prepares for a return to the faculty in the fall of 2025,” Kaull said in an email to The Daily Athenaeum. Kaull said Nathan Sorber will serve as interim dean effective Feb.
