Published 10:44 am Friday, March 21, 2025 EAST LANSING — Emotions ran high following Brandywine’s heartbreaking 31-29 Division 3 state semifinal loss in girls’ basketball Thursday afternoon to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep at Michigan State University’s Jack Breslin Center. It marked the second straight year that Arbor Prep has ended Brandywine’s season. The Gators edged the top-ranked Lady Bobcats 33-30 in the 2024 state championship game as well.

Melvin recently officiated his final game a week ago Friday, the Division 3 district girls’ championship at Bridgman High School between No. 1-ranked Niles Brandywine and White Pigeon. The 2024-25 season marked Melvin’s 50th year as a registered basketball official with the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Brandywine (26-0) moves into Tuesday’s 7 p.m. state quarterfinals against Grandville Calvin Christian (20-6) at Kalamazoo Loy-Norrix. Grandville Calvin Christian won its own regional by beating No. 2-rated Pewamo-Westphaila 39-36.

Josh Hood’s Lady Bobcats hoisted the Division 3 district championship trophy Friday following a decisive 66-21 win over White Pigeon at Bridgman High School. The win sends No. 1-ranked Brandywine (24-0) back home for a 7 p.m. matchup with Bronson (22-2) on Monday.
