A Raleigh pastor pleaded guilty this week to falsely obtaining thousands of dollars in COVID-19 loans for personal expenses. According to the United States Department of Justice, 45-year-old Mitchell Summerfield of Raleigh pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud. Summerfield faces a maximum 30-year prison sentence, a $1 million fine and a five-year supervised release. Summerfield was also required to pay restitution of an unspecified amount.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the NB.1.8.1 strain is particularly prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean and western Pacific regions, though some cases have entered the United States. Her family -- son Tyler Campbell, daughter-in-law Susan Campbell and 8-year-old grandson Miles -- were killed on Memorial Day 2024 in a crash in Garner. Police say Jordan Porter was drunk and high when he ran a red light and collided with the Campbells' car. He has pleaded guilty to reckless driving, speeding and running a red light, and he has yet to stand trial on three counts of second-degree murder. "That was the worst day of my life," Kathy Campbell said.

Restaurant managers in Harnett County are hoping to identify a person who they believe has been breaking into businesses along I-95. Two restaurants in Dunn captured a person on surveillance video entering their businesses within the last month, stealing cash and damaging property. Employees at both arrived to find a similar aftermath: the glass from their front doors meticulously cut out and placed to the side. That’s why management believes the same person is responsible.

North Carolina Highway Patrol said the two troopers investigated for mishandling their response in a fatal crash will remain on desk duty. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman will not charge the troopers criminally, saying the evidence would not support a successful prosecution after Trooper Garrett Macario gave false statements about his involvement in the chase. The investigation showed Mason ran from a state trooper, hitting speeds around 100 mph.
