The 56-year-old former state treasurer had a big lead over the four other candidates vying to replace the outgoing Mary-Ann Baldwin: Paul Fitts, Eugene Myrick, Terrance (Truth) Ruth and James Shaughnessy IV. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, Cowell had 61.1% of the vote with 105,353 votes. Fitts was second with 31,269 votes (18.1%). Cowell stepped down as president of the Dix Park Conservancy on Oct. 4 to run for mayor.

At approximately 3:47 p.m., a State Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a speeding white truck on Central Avenue in Butner. The driver refused to yield and a pursuit ensued, continuing onto Old NC 75. The suspect abruptly stopped and reversed, striking the patrol vehicle.
