Game 5 started with an unfortunate, fluke goal, but ended with the deserved outcome, as the Dallas Stars’ relentless energy and consistent physicality totally overwhelmed a Colorado Avalanche team that took far too long to find their hard hats and lunch buckets in a disheartening 6-2 loss in Dallas. After a series of odd bounces following the opening face-off, the Stars found themselves up a goal after Wyatt Johnston’s fling toward the Avalanche net snuck behind goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood.

It had been nearly three years – 1,032 days, to be exact – but longtime Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog didn’t miss a beat. Unfortunately, the Avalanche’s power play was all but absent from Game 3’s exuberant proceedings, going 0-for-6 and dooming them to a second consecutive, overtime loss to the Dallas Stars.

The Colorado Avalanche have wound their way through a tumultuous regular season – one that saw them battle injuries in the early going, trade both of their goaltenders away in the opening third of the season, deal away a star and fan favorite in Mikko Rantanen, and revamp their entire roster at the trade deadline with more depth, versatility and size – and have come through the other side with only five fewer points than they did in the previous season.

He’s back. Gabriel Landeskog’s conditioning loan has been terminated and he will rejoin the Avalanche today.

Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog waited nearly three years to play again in a hockey game. He’ll wait only 24 hours to play his next one. Landeskog, 32, began a conditioning stint with the Colorado Eagles – the Colorado Avalanche’s AHL affiliate – when he played in the Eagles’ 2-0 loss to the visiting Henderson Silver Knights, but the game’s result definitely wasn’t the point. Landeskog played for roughly 15 minutes in Friday’s loss, and seemed none the worse for wear following the game.
