WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a global market meltdown, President Donald Trump on Wednesday abruptly backed down on his tariffs on most nations for 90 days, but raised his tax rate on Chinese imports to 125%. It was seemingly an attempt to narrow what had been an unprecedented trade war between the U.S. and most of the world to one between the U.S. and China.
New Bees ballpark bringing business to Daybreak

SOUTH JORDAN – Businesses in Daybreak are hoping the Bees Ballpark will bring them new visitors. Jess Blakeman, regional manager of The Break Sports Grills, is taking advantage of the new customers in South Jordan. “Hopefully more foot traffic, bring new experiences to the area,” she said. The Break has been in Daybreak for more than 10 years, but this is the first time they’ve been neighbors with a home sports team venue. Blakeman said it’s the only full bar in South Jordan.

A laying-in-state service was held for the former representative. SALT LAKE COUNTY — Salt Lake County leaders are raising awareness for identifying and reporting child abuse. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Some of the people who handle these incidents said in a press conference Thursday, that Utahns need to know what to look for and how to help children who may be suffering. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said there were 8,791 victims of child abuse or neglect in Utah in 2024.
Rose Park homeowners say Jordan River trail closure created crime bottleneck

SALT LAKE CITY — Homeowners living along the Jordan River said the temporary trail closure has only brought problems closer to their front yards. Aaron and Sue Sylvern are a Rose Park couple who live right at the border of the closed-off section. Salt Lake City Police announced the trail is closed from Cottonwood Park to 700 North.

SALT LAKE CITY – There’s a new addition to Temple Square. Wednesday morning, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled a new sculpture on its Main Street Plaza. The sculpture shows five women of different ages and ethnicities supporting each other. The message it’s meant to depict is one Christ taught himself, as recorded in the Bible. It’s the church’s first sculpture on the east side of Temple Square. Faith and wisdom are now on display in a new way at Temple Square. “It is glorious.
Actor Val Kilmer dies at 65 in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Val Kilmer, the brooding, versatile actor who played fan favorite Iceman in “Top Gun,” donned a voluminous cape as Batman in “Batman Forever” and portrayed Jim Morrison in “The Doors,” has died. He was 65. Kilmer died Tuesday night in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends, his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, said in an email to The Associated Press. Val Kilmer died from pneumonia. He had recovered after a 2014 throat cancer diagnosis that required two tracheotomies.
West Jordan's Good Landlord Program looking for more participation

SALT LAKE CITY — It may cost more to own a rental property in West Jordan. The City Council wants to raise their landlord fees to keep up with inflation. The council is in the discussion phase of deciding how much they want to raise the standard fee for rental units, which currently ranges between $34 and $171, depending on the type of unit. The council is also discussing raising the fee for the Good Landlord Program, which is currently $21 per unit.
