PROVO — A man detained Friday for allegedly brandishing a gun at Provo Town Center is now accused of possessing 71 homemade bombs at his apartment. Police received reports Friday of a man who had been brandishing a gun at Provo Town Centre Mall and later arrested Eric Whitaker, 41, after locating four devices with fuses sticking out of them in his trunk. "Four total devices that appear to be pipe bombs were removed from the area for safe disposal," police said.

SOUTH JORDAN — A driver involved in a collision last week has died, police say. On April 17, a truck with a trailer was heading north on Redwood Road at about 6:30 p.m. when it hit a southbound pickup truck that turned left to go east on 9800 South, South Jordan police said. The pickup-truck driver was injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition. South Jordan police announced Friday that the driver had died from injuries sustained in the crash.

LEHI — The interlocal committee for the northern Utah County portion of the newly split Alpine School District has chosen a new name. Alpine School District was the largest school district in the state until voters chose to split it three ways in the 2024 general election. Initially, the cities of Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Highland, Lehi and a portion of Draper were going by the name Central School District when the split was being proposed and voted on.

CEDAR CITY — The almost 3,000 Southern Utah University graduates were reminded to enjoy the small moments and find their own paths as they celebrated their accomplishments Thursday. "Tonight we celebrate a moment of triumph, a milestone that marks years of hard work, growth and determination. And what a moment this is," SUU President Mindy Benson said. The 2,859 graduates hail from 41 different countries, 47 states, and for the first time, all 29 Utah counties, Benson said.
