"The purpose of Foss is to build confidence and provide a lifetime of safety around water," said Jenia Strom, a community engagement specialist with Foss Swim School. that disparities for drowning deaths are highest among Black children. Receiving swim lessons from a qualified instructor can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children ages 1-4, Children's Minnesota reports.

    MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — In the Twin Cities, a group is playing Dungeons and Dragons to help people slay their inner demons. Kehl's Quest is a one-of-a-kind Recovery Community Organization (RCO) based in the Twin Cities. Players use tabletop role-playing games such as D&D to build community. "People surprise themselves when they play D&D for the first time," said Dominic Tomas, co-organizer of Kehl's Quest: Adventures in Recovery.

    MINNEAPOLIS — In February, the U of M's School of Dentistry is helping to "Give Kids a Smile."  The U has been part of the national "Give Kids a Smile" event for 20 years with dental students leading the charge. Earlier this month, students treated more than 60 young patients in one day. They did everything from dental work to finding grants to pay for care for patients with no insurance. We spoke with faculty about the lengths these students go to to serve the community and give back.

    MINNEAPOLIS — A Twin Cities-based dance program is helping kids and older adults find their rhythm in social situations. Heart of Dance, located in Minneapolis, offers partner dance classes for both middle-school students and adult seniors. Participants learn different dances and the cultures from where they originated. Ballroom dance educator Andrea Mirenda and former Minnesota State Senator Ember Reichgott Junge created the program in 2015.
