Tree Work Begins in Town of Aurora

O’Connell Electric is in the final phase of trimming trees in the village before GoNetSpeed installs fiber optic cables, and the tree work is beginning in the Town of Aurora. Supervisor Chuck Snyder said that the work is expected to be complete by the beginning of April. Most of the tree work will be taking place on the north side of town.
Wales Appoints New Town Official

The Town of Wales appointed a new Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer at the Jan. 14 reorganizational meeting. Daniel Whitehead, who has lived in Wales for the last 30 years, will be assuming both duties. He is replacing Walter Raichel who recently retired. Whitehead retired from the Cheektowaga Police Department 17 years ago.
District Wide Evacuation Practiced in Holland

Officials and employees of the Holland Central School District are practicing for an emergency that would involve the entire school district evacuating to a secure location. Administrators and members of the leadership team practiced it over the summer, and on a staff development day in November all members of the faculty and school building employees practiced the drill as well.
Pooches get Pricey: Wales Maxes Out Dog Control Budget

As the fiscal year comes to a close, the Town of Wales finds itself exceeding the budget for services from the local Dog Control Officer (DCO) and it relates to recent hurricanes and ‘dog dumping.’Supervisor Timothy Howard said at the Nov. 12 meeting that the town has contracted with SPCA in recent years to take dogs from the DCO that are not claimed and reunited with their owner after five days.
Police Department Receives Grant to Purchase TASERs

The East Aurora Police Department recently received a federal grant from the Division of Criminal Justice Services to supply the department with eight TASERs, along with the training and accessories to use the equipment. The grant is $55,000 and Chief of Police Patrick Welch has asked the board to consider approving this addition to the department before Jan. 1, 2025 when prices on the equipment are expected to increase.

The Erie County Supreme Court has ruled on a decision without conducting a hearing that the Town of Wales needs to comply with Freedom of Information Requests (FOILs) that were filed in 2022. The decision and order were filed on Aug. 29. The court is also ordering that Wales pay all of the attorney fees associated with this case. The Village Board recently approved a request by the Building and Code Enforcement Office to remove the signs at Oasis Smoke Shop, located at 25 Hamburg Street in East Aurora. In a letter to the board, Code Enforcement Officer Elizabeth Cassidy said that the signs on the business that say “Oasis Smoke Shop” were installed without a permit.
