CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Between 2003 and 2021, guns were the leading cause of unintentional deaths in children. 76% of firearms used in these deaths were not locked up, and 91% percent of those left unlocked were loaded. Just weeks ago, a three-year-old boy accidentally shot himself after police say he got his hands on an unsecured gun. The boy’s mother, now charged in his death. After each of these tragedies, law enforcement and advocates push the same message: store your guns safely.

Be it a loved one or a stranger, until paramedics arrive. you can be the first responder, and the difference between life and death. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital each year; fewer than 10-percent survive, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) can be life-saving.

With the end of Suicide Prevention Month in September comes another noteworthy time aimed at discussing mental illness. In 1990, Congress officially established the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week to open conversation about the growing crisis and bring attention to the resources in place to help those who may be struggling.

It’s a years-long partnership with QuikTrip locations in the CMPD’s jurisdiction. Officers said when people would find those great deals on places like Facebook Marketplace, sometimes caution would be thrown to the wind.

As parents start planning those snacks, they shouldn’t forget about a hidden danger in their student’s lunchbox. “If a lunch is not packed safely, any bacteria in any parts of the lunch will multiply,” Sandra Eskin, a food safety and inspection service specialist deputy with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said.
