A 7-year-old boy has died nearly a week after drowning in a pool at an east Wichita hotel. Zaniriusz Chambers Jr. died Wednesday, his mother Lauren Wilson told The Eagle in a phone call. Police were called to the Red Roof hotel in the 7300 block of East Kellogg for a “public accident” at 9:24 p.m. May 1. Sedgwick County EMS arrived and took the boy to the hospital, a police media report shows. He remained there until he died. Wilson said her son drowned in the hotel pool.

Three people died Wednesday after a crash between a pickup truck and a semi along U.S. Highway 54 in south central Kansas. The victims’ identities were not released, as the Kansas Highway Patrol is working to notify their families. The crash was reported at 3:56 p.m. along U.S. 54 at mile marker 98, roughly one mile east of Mullinville in Kiowa County, KHP trooper Anthony Calderon said in a phone call.

The man’s identity was not released, and the cause of the crash is being investigated, Wichita police Lt. Krys Henderson said at the scene. Police were called at about 4 p.m. to the area of George Washington Boulevard and Aloma Street for a report of someone driving erratically.

A 47-year-old woman was killed and a 38-year-old man seriously injured in a head-on collision Monday in southeast Kansas. Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs identified the woman as Teresa Phillips of Chanute. The crash was reported about 6 a.m. along Kansas Highway 39, roughly 15 miles east of Chanute in Neosho County. Phillips was northbound on K-39 in a 2019 Dodge Durango SUV.
