Tenants in New York City could be feeling a lot cooler by this time next year, as a newly proposed bill is requiring that landlords provide air conditioning. Councilmember Lincoln Restler proposed the legislation and other advocates have come to back it. According to Restler’s office, 350 New Yorkers die every year due to heat-related illnesses.

One day after allegedly biting the arm of an NYPD officer while at a protest, Councilmember Susan Zhuang addressed the public for the first time to shed some light on the story. According to the NYPD, Zhuang was charged after police say she bit an officer. Zhuang spoke out at a community gathering in Gravesend to provide insight on what she describes as a chaotic scene where she helped out an elderly woman at the protest.

News 12 sat down with the NYPD to discuss how policing has changed since the How Many Stops Act was passed a few months ago. The new act has been implemented for a week within the police department and requires the NYPD to document certain information when making a stop, including the person’s race, gender, age, what led to the interaction and if a summons or use of force played a part.

Brooklyn residents flooded the corner of 25th Avenue and 86th Street in Bensonhurst on Monday to demand a stop to what they say is an unsafe construction site. The construction site is for a new shelter that is slated to come to the area. Construction started Monday morning, but local neighbors say they're concerned for their safety. Hundreds of protesters were spotted outside of the construction site, saying that the construction was not following safety protocol.

Summer Streets is a program that helps people enjoy 20 miles of car-free streets over five Saturdays in July and August. The program is expanding an extra two hours this year, helping people spend more time enjoying the outdoors without the interruption of vehicle traffic.
