THE latest survey by anti litter group IBAL has found three coastal areas in Kerry to be ‘moderately littered’. This week Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) published the results of its 2023 ‘Marine’ survey of coastal areas which saw 33 beaches, rivers and harbours – and their immediate surroundings – across the country examined by judges from An Taisce in June and July. In Kerry the adjudicators inspected Dingle, Portmagee and Ballybunion.

Details of the meeting were announced on Tuesday following comments, the previous day, from Rose of Tralee Chief Executive Anthony O’Gara suggesting the televised Rose selection nights could be moved to Dublin unless the festival company receives greater support from Tralee’s business community and is able to find a dedicated venue to host the televised event going forward.

Kelsey proved a hit with audiences on Tuesday night’s broadcast, with the talented young Cahersiveen musician hitting it off with Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas. The Cork rose, Kate Shaughnessy – a 25-year-old care coordinator in a nursing home – got proceedings underway on Monday night as the first contender to take to the stage. Ms Shaughnessy is from Ballincollig, but both her parents are from Tralee.

For the first time in festival history, the televised selection nights had two hosts, with the presenters taking it in turns to chat with the various Roses. Thomas is only the second woman ever to host the event. The last was Kathleen Watkins all the way back in 1977 when she stepped in to present the show as her husband, Gay Byrne, was unavailable.

The New York Rose Róisin Wiley has been crowned as the 2023 Rose of Tralee following two nights of televised selection nights at the Munster Technological University’s Sports Academy complex in Tralee. The 27-year-old is from Manhatten from and works as VP of National Sales at a consumer marketing companyHer parents Eddie and Majella are from Killmallock and Templeglantine in county Limerick and emigrated to New York in their 20s.

The 27-year-old is from Manhatten from and works as VP of National Sales at a consumer marketing companyHer parents Eddie and Majella are from Killmallock and Templeglantine in county Limerick and emigrated to New York in their 20s. She succeeds Westmeath’s Rachel Duffy as Rose and becomes the 63rd woman to hold the world famous title since the festival was founded in 1959. She had been was among the bookies favourite to win the coveted title.

When the Rose of Tralee company announced in May that it would not be funding any street entertainment this year there was considerable shock and no little anger among the local business community.
