New Kerry medical facility sparks town tension as Killarney is chosen over Tralee as the locationThe site of a new Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) in Kerry has raised concerns in Tralee after Killarney was chosen as the preferred location. The HSE South West confirmed a new MIU is to be located on the grounds of St Columbanus Home in Killarney, and not in Tralee as many had expected.

Known locally as the ‘canal walk’, the trail runs parallel with the main Tralee to Blennerville Road, and is separated by a tributary of the canal that flows from the lock gates to the rowing club nearer the town. Pedestrians regularly use it during daylight hours, but confirmation that lighting is being installed there is sure to be welcomed by many in Tralee.

The worst affected parts are The Mall and The Square – both of which are focal points in the town centre. Stains of food and drink are also producing a sickly stench during the current fine weather. A Tralee resident contacted The Kerryman to say it is ‘a disgrace’ seeing the main streets of the town looking so dirty as the summer season nears. Less than a decade ago, Kerry County Council spent millions in refurbishing the same streets that form part Tralee’s main thoroughfare.

Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Daly tabled a motion at a recent Tralee MD meeting when he asked the council to meet with management at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) to discuss plans for the proposed MIU in the town. Such a facility would cater for the rising population in Tralee and help ease pressure at UHK’s Accident & Emergency Unit where patients are waiting unreasonable amounts of time for treatment.
