    The derelict Good Shepherd Convent site in Cork City, which was extensively damaged by another suspicious fire this week, is being considered for a new residential or apartment development. The Irish Examiner has learned that a property development firm is looking at potential development options for the landmark former Magdalene laundry and orphanage which was formally declared derelict in 2019.

    A warning letter has been issued by Kerry County Council over the use of an English name on a housing development in Dingle. Dingle is a Gaeltacht town, in Corca Dhuibhne, one of two Gaeltacht areas in Kerry. Three weeks ago the council opened a planning enforcement file after the name “Cairn Close”, appeared on advertising hoarding signs outside the private housing development, after local Sinn Féin councillor Robert Brosnan complained about the use of the anglicised name.

    BRIGHT ORANGE COLOURED African hoopoes are visiting the south coast of Ireland in record numbers, acording to Irish birdwatchers. The birds, the size of thrushes with a distinctive crescent head dress “like an American Indian Chief’s headdress”, are coming in flocks to Ireland, driven by the Saharan wind and sunny weather. Connecticut’s Sacred Heart University in the US first established outreach links with West Kerry 20 years ago.
