Hello! This is Everything Is Amazing, a newsletter about the science of curiosity, attention, wonder and why million-to-one chances seem to crop up nine times out of ten. As we gallop into the final straight of Season 6, I’m finding there’s a bunch of stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into the newsletters I’ll be publishing over the next week or so.

We’re watching the pioneering 90s TV show Babylon 5. If you want to join us, hit subscribe then go to your account and turn on the Let’s Watch notifications. This episode at long last answers a big question hanging over from the pilot: whatever happened to Carolyn Sykes? OK, nobody was actually asking that question. The character didn’t make much of an impact and felt like a weird fit with Sinclair in the pilot.

SPOILERIFIC WONDERS! Garibaldi telling the reporter than he and Sheridan walked 50 miles through Martian desert comes back twice - an entire issue of the DC Comic series (which was script approved by JMS himself, and, unlike the first run of novels, remains "canon" for those who care about such things), and B5 Season 3, Episode 8, "Messages from Earth." Sinclair and Garibaldi stumbled across - without realizing the significance of either - both the Interplanetary Expeditions (IPX) dig...

We’re watching the pioneering 90s TV show Babylon 5. If you want to join us, hit subscribe then go to your account and turn on the Let’s Watch notifications. This week’s episode encapsulates all the things that don’t quite work in season 1 of Babylon 5. Wooden, hammy acting. On-the-nose dialogue. Silly humour. Flat action. And yet. Write More with Simon K Jones is a reader-supported publication. If you’re enjoying the Babylon 5 rewatch, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

I know, that’s a big question. I’ve asked it in the singular, too, because I want everyone to try to focus in on the single most important ambition for the year, rather than listing several. So, what is your 2024 writing goal? It could be to write more frequently or regularly, or to complete - or begin! - a long-gestating project, or to reach a certain number of subscribers on your newsletter. For me, it’s to wrap up Tales from the Triverse in a satisfying way.

Poor Lola. I guess she’s learning, as we all do, that when something seems too good to be true it’s normally built on a lie 😕Plus, I miss Clarke too!Liked the voiceover. Didn’t sound too crackly to me 🤔As for Substack, I guess I’m in the same boat as yourself. Hanging around for now, but taking your advice from a few weeks back to mostly avoid Notes and just stick to my subscribed publications. Seems like the safest bet for now 🙄
