NHS Blood and Transplant has issued an urgent appeal for O-negative donors to replenish “critically low” supplies in the East of England. There are 4,587 donors in the region with the vital blood type whose last contribution was more than 12 months ago. Four bank holidays, the Easter holidays and a half-term break within six weeks made maintaining steady stocks particularly challenging.

The Founders 6-Marathon Challenge has raised almost £46,000 for Helping Herts. For the fourth year running, the charity’s co-founders Gordon Morrison and Jim Tatchell completed one of the toughest walking challenges around. They trekked the equivalent of six marathons over two weeks, with a Bishop’s Stortford leg kicking off their 12-day, 156-mile journey across Hertfordshire. This year, the challenge raised a remarkable £45,870, which will support children and young people across the county.

Outstanding personal achievement earned Bishop’s Stortford’s Oliver Dellow a King’s Scout Award. The 23-year-old is a volunteer at the Voyager Explorer Scout Unit at Silver Leys in the town. He was presented with the accolade - the highest recognition in Scouting for adventure and skill development - by Chief Scout Dwayne Fields. The Duke of Kent, joint president of The Scouts, joined Mr Fields in congratulating the science teacher at Helena Romanes School in Dunmow on his achievement.

McDonald’s is under increasing pressure to withdraw its plans for a drive-thru fast food restaurant in Bishop’s Stortford. Thorley Parish Council has warned the burger brand that its proposals are liable to a legal challenge by judicial review as they stand. McDonald’s Restaurants Limited and Central Co-op have submitted a reserved matters application for a new neighbourhood centre at St James’ Park.

Start Hill bus company Central Connect has stepped in to save a critical service between Stansted Airport and Braintree. The new 333 service will run every day of the year with an hourly timetable and overnight journeys. It replaces the soon-to-be-withdrawn Arriva 133. This new connection, linking Braintree Bus Interchange with Stansted Airport, will continue to serve communities including Rayne, Felsted, Little Dunmow, Great Dunmow and Takeley.
