Hertford and Stortford MP Josh Dean told Parliament that a school in his constituency has a supply of snacks for children sent to school without breakfast. He was speaking in a debate about the Labour Government’s expansion of the free school meals programme. From the start of the 2026 school year, every pupil whose household is on Universal Credit will have a new entitlement and 100,000 children are set to benefit.

Uttlesford District Council has regained full planning powers over major applications after more than three years in special measures. The decision to “de-designate” the authority was confirmed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government in a letter today (Friday, June 6). It means major schemes cannot leapfrog the council, moving directly to the Planning Inspectorate for permission or refusal, and must once again go through Uttlesford's planning process.

North East Herts MP Chris Hinchliff has petitioned the Government for a planning system that puts people and nature before profit. The Labour MP, elected in July last year, presented the appeal to Parliament yesterday (Thursday, June 5). He said it was signed by hundreds of his constituents, who include residents of the East Herts villages of Little Hadham, Braughing, Standon and Puckeridge.

Published: 12:05, 06 June 2025 Hertfordshire has missed out on a share of £15 billion to boost regional transport links. The Government’s decision has been greeted with dismay by the county council’s new Liberal Democrat administration. The authority points out that Hertfordshire has hundreds of miles of roads along with critical public transport links to the capital, Cambridge and the Midlands, and urgently needs additional funding to boost all forms of sustainable transport.
